Lifejackets are one of the most important safety components on your boat. We know lifejackets are usually stored away in a locker and often not used on a daily basis. We want to remind you of a few things about lifejacket safety:
1. Ensure your all crew know where the jackets are stored
2. Before setting out on the water have each crew member try on a jacket and adjust it to suit their size
3. If the crew are not wearing the jackets have them store them appropriately where they can identify their own jacket
4. If you have inflatable lifejackets onboard ensure everyone knows how they work
5. Have your inflatable lifejackets serviced and checked regularly
Lifejackets are usually grabbed in an emergency, you don’t want to be adjusting and looking for them in these situations. Taking five minutes to prepare yourself and your crew could be the difference between life and death.
REMEMBER: It is the skipper’s legal responsibility to ensure that lifejackets are worn in situations of heightened risk, such as when crossing a bar, in rough water, during an emergency, and by non-swimmers. Children should always wear a lifejacket.
Think smart and be safe this summer.
